Descript
Text-based video and audio editor with an AI co-editor, Underlord

· 292 reviews

About
Descript is a video and audio editor that transcribes your recordings and lets you edit the video by editing the transcript. You record yourself, your screen or remote guests, or import existing footage. Underlord, its AI co-editor, can cut filler words and retakes and make edits from a text instruction. One-click tools clean audio (Studio Sound), correct eye contact and remove backgrounds. Descript can also add captions, generate thumbnails and YouTube descriptions, cut social clips and translate video. Plans meter usage in two ways: media minutes of imported or recorded media, and AI credits spent on AI features. Neither rolls over to the next month.
Ideal for
Podcasters, educators, marketers and YouTubers who record themselves talking and want to edit that recording by editing its transcript, then cut clips for social platforms.
What it does well
Text-based editing: deleting or moving words in the transcript cuts or moves the matching video
Remove Filler Words and Remove Retakes clean a recording in one pass, and you can review each cut
Studio Sound removes background noise and echo and enhances the voice in one click
Eye Contact redirects your gaze toward the camera when you read off-screen
Rooms records remote guests in up to 4K with a separate track per participant
Creator plan exports in 4K without a watermark
Pro + Medium: a finished video with licensed Storyblocks video B-roll and motion graphics
Media minutes: a minute of your own imported or recorded media, which you edit yourself
None on Mini and Pro: all 8 from one brief
You finish script, voiceover, footage and visuals, editing, music and sound

A finished edit from one talking-head upload
Upload one English recording to camera. VidRush cuts dead air and filler, adds B-roll, captions, music, your theme and a thumbnail, and returns the finished edit. Descript's Underlord makes a cut you review and finish.
Each minute is finished video
On Pro + Medium a VidRush minute runs $1.46 to $2.18 and is a finished video. A Descript media minute runs $0.01 to $0.03 and is your own recording, which you still edit or pay an editor $50 to $150 a video to finish.
A quote first, charged only on completion
A Quote Statement shows model, duration, voice and estimated credits before anything is spent. Credits are charged only when a video completes. Underlord has no fixed price per action and uses credits on every message.
Unused credits roll over
Up to half of your monthly allotment carries into the next month. Descript's media minutes and AI credits reset every billing cycle.
Licensed B-roll under your rules
The Pro model uses Storyblocks B-roll licensed in perpetuity. Blacklist channels or sites, prefer up to 5 sources, or switch to a Creative Commons and public-domain-only mode.
Long-form from 6 to 60 minutes
VidRush is built around 6 to 60 minute YouTube videos, with an AI presenter (beta) as the A-roll inside a full edit. A reviewer reports Descript avatar segments run up to 12 minutes.
A timeline and chat edits for the last 20%
Refine any scene in the timeline editor or ask the Rush Agent (beta). A re-render costs 10% of the original generation, so a weak clip costs a swap, not a new video.
Pros
Returns a finished talking-head video from one upload: dead air and filler cut, B-roll, captions, music, your theme and a thumbnail added
Research, script, voiceover, footage, editing, music, captions and thumbnail come in a single charge
Credits are charged only when a video completes; blocked prompts, rejected uploads and system failures cost nothing
A Quote Statement shows estimated credits, model and duration before any credit is committed
Real Storyblocks B-roll licensed in perpetuity, with a blacklist, up to 5 preferred sources and a CC and public-domain-only mode
Train a Brand Profile on one of your own videos so each episode cuts and reads like your channel
Cons
Built for long-form widescreen YouTube, so Shorts, Reels and clipping a recording into highlights need another tool
Talking-head and avatar videos are English only; other videos come in English, German or Spanish, with German and Spanish narration less fluent than English
USE CASES
Faceless, talking-head or with an AI presenter: give VidRush a brief, a script or a recording and get the finished long-form video back.
Faceless documentary and explainer channels
Give VidRush a topic or a paragraph and get back a researched, narrated documentary with real footage, music, captions and a thumbnail.

It helped me monetize a channel in 1 month.
“So far, the vidrush videos went viral much faster and more often than the ones my editors did. AND, I created those videos in 1-2 hours, with minimal input on my end. Maybe I changed 1 or 2 scenes. The videos turn out very good.”

From zero to 3 monetized channels in 5 months
“In that short time I managed to monetize three YouTube channels. That's something I never would have pulled off so fast with a traditional setup. What used to take my team roughly four days to coordinate, scripting, editing, voiceover, finding the right footage, I can now get done in under 30 minutes.”

“My editors have been in panic mode since I started using vidrush. It makes great videos in a few hours and also create thumbnail for it. The editing is better than 70% of my editors.”

Saves a Huge Amount of Time and Delivers Real Quality
“I especially want to highlight the custom script feature, which lets you personalize content nicely, as well as the rendering quality, which is consistently solid.”

World-Class Tool, World-Class Support
“VidRush has become the backbone of my entire production workflow. The voice quality, imagery, and video output are genuinely impressive, everything comes out looking and sounding professional without the hours of manual editing other tools require.”

Vidrush is for you if you want good quality videos fast
“Vidrush is great because it cuts video production time down by a lot. With a few prompts or even your own custom script, you can get a video done in around a couple hours, versus possibly days with a normal video editor.”

BUYER BEWHERE
“I purchased the Creator membership with 800 credits, only to successfully complete 1 video. The other two videos drained all the credits.”

· Descript user
“I uploaded a 30 minute lecture recording to be cleaned up for Unnecessary spaces and UHs. I ended up paying a subscription of $24 and got a horrible result of a video recording in which many of the words important to the understanding of the lecture were removed in in the process of removing the spaces.”

How is it the best AND the worst?!
“I have to restart the app all the time in order to get basic functions to reset and work properly. Transitions aren’t always reliable, AI voice regen leaves so much to be desired (the amount of credits I have wasted on this alone), it will randomly reset and go super slow”

Descript makes editing way faster for me
“Editing videos by rearranging text makes it way quicker, and I love the concept of 'scenes' to help speed up editing by auto animating elements in and out. The stability of the product has noticeably improved in the 2+ years I've been using it.”
